Hi, Gents,
I would like to present the construction process of one the vintage glider like AFV-10.
By courtesy of Vincent he granted me permission to present my model. I am not so much prolific in model building as other folks on this retroplane site. However I was so much spellbound with the models which are presented on this site.
So, I built the first model SGP 1-1 you might see as per link the building log and flights
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yv0BTf6xRSA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vOwQwysP1U
The second model it will be AFV-10 in scale of 1:4.
It was one the first glider, well flying in USSR time between 1920-1930. This model took a first score in glider completion of 1925. With wind 3 m/s , the glider flew about 600 meters from slope. For that time it was achievement.

http://hobbyport.ru/avia/avf_10.htm
Here are some pictures I started to build it.
A liquid I prepare it is for darkening the metal part (brass), it is quite cheap to make a solvent than to buy a real one.

Hi Nikolay, welcome on the forum, I'm glad to see you here.
Nice project, I love all these all old and unusual gliders
For what are these brass parts? can you give us the recipe of liquid for darkening brass?

Continuation:
I almost finished the major airfoils (32 pc) and made airfoils for fuselage.
Vincent you asked about the brass part. The brass parts are details as to make bolted connection of T-joint of frame. You can see on picture where I made a mock-up of typical joint. Just to see how it will look like.
This will be bolted to frame with 1.6 mm bolts, and each part has holes where wire-bracing are fixed. So, it will be so-called semi scale wire-bracing. I will have to buy only turnbuckles
http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3.....3408#a1_2143408
It is impossible to fabricate around 80 micro-turnbuckles therefore I have to buy it.
You also asked recipe of liquid for darkening brass. It is quite simple (process in pictures http://shipmodeling.ru/content/tooling/brassblacking2)
1. Baking soda
2. Garden CuSo4
3. Ammonia (possible to buy 10% drugstore)
4. Mix CuSo4 in water until CuSo4 stops dissolving (water around 150-200 gr).
5. Take a big cup (because of too much foam/bubbles, around 600 gr), pour the mixture in this cup.
6. Take a tea-spun and gently start put soda in the solvent.
7. You will see sediment.
8. Continue to put soda slowly until bubbles almost stop.
9. Filter the sediment. Dry it a little. Not obligatory.
10. Take around a bottle of ammonia (40-50 gr) and part by part add in ammonia the sediment. You will see dark-blue solvent. When the sediment stop dissolving, the solvent is ready for darkening.
11. Handling with ammonia to be done in vent room or open air.
12. Put clean brass part in solvent and wait around 20-40 minutes depending on desirable coulure.
13. After this, flush the brass parts with water.
14. In the end the parts can be covered with lacquer for metal.
15. Do not so much think about proportion in solvent, during the experiment it is possible to see what should be added.

Hi, Gents,
Some photos of the construction. It is quite slaw process but there is no need to hurry up as winter in our region more than 6 months. I have a plenty of time to finalize the glider.
So, you can see that the major parts are made. The joints for wire-bracing I started to bolt them up. Instead of wires for the time being I tried to use threads, just to see how the bracing will look on fuselage.
The current weight of all parts is 1800 gr. So, it is good, as I am planning not to exceed more than 4 kg for flying weight. Wing load to be around 38.5 gr/d.

Hi, Gents.
Continuations of the construction of AFV-10 ¼ scale glider. So, I spent too much time by trying to make a nose, many trails and attempts, but I came what you see on the photos attached.
The rest is self explanatory. Progress is in general quite slow, but there is no need to hurry as the winter just started. See some photos of my house and the deep of snow after snow blizzard. It is first snow blizzard in this season, but it is not an end.

The metal parts and fuse are not yet painted. The parts will be lacquered with black lac. However the some parts are already blackened with special home made solutions. The fuse will be lacquered later when all parts are made.

Hi Nikolay,
I just looked at Google Maps were you live. It is quite near to Japan....
From the distant view it seems, that not very much people live on your island. Are there other people building airplanes in your neighborhood?
Your construction is of very good quality and with all of these metal parts it is very complex!
I am wondering from where you get all the special materials at "the end of world" (sorry if I have a wrong impression....).
Please report soon about all progresses.
Kind regards
Walter |

Hi, Walter,
Yes, indeed the Sakhalin Island is quite far away from the developed areas and Moscow or whatever. However the Island is quite developed and it is enormous business with oil and gas exploration (western and Russian oil and gas companies). A great deal of people lives on the island, for sure, not like in Europe, but it is normal density of population for Russia, as Russia is huge.
I have some time difficulties to buy some materials for hobby, but it is general problem all around the Russia as to buy the cheap hobby materials and electronic parts. All specific materials (balsa, electronic parts and etc) come from abroad. So, it is matter of planning when you do some hobby.
In general, it is delusion about the Far East of Russia, but some cities in this region are quite developed and have the folks who have interest in hobby-modeling.
As to retro-glider modeling I would say, it is not so much folks in Russian hobby society who takes interest in this. But the airplane building hobby is quite developed.
Walter, Ich kann deutsche Sprache verstein und ein wenig schreiben. Die deutsche Sprache ist meine zweite fremde Sprache studierte ich einmal. Wir haben Ski und Snowboarding und weiter.
Vielen Grussen,
Nikolay

Dear Nikolay
As Walter, I was very impressed by the quantity of snow in your region and as Walter I was also looking at Google Earth.
Sakhalin Island? Never heard about these Islands. It is now very cold? I notice very cold in the winter and acceptable temperature in the summer.
And a lot of history. Not always simple during the centuries.
From our side of Europe, we have the impression that you are living on the other side of the world. So far away.
You have good slopes in your region?
Maybe Vincent may organise a future Retroplane in Sakhalin Island?
Good construction and best regards.

When we built Sakhalin-2 project (Shell) there were so many people from Europe here and still there that they do not want to go back to Europe as they see that Russia and Far East is Indeed marvelous place to be .
We have slopes downhere but I am still in search of finding the good slopes as the most slopes are wild and out of roads, only for off-road cars.

Hi, Gents,
Long time I did not post a progress done for AVF-10 glider model. So, having spent a lot of time I managed to build what I present now.
You may see that I did put all servo under the chair of pilot, and all controls are done like on real glider. That was my idea to adhere to original controls of ailerons and rudders.
I weighted the model and the model weight now is 3 000 gr, the design weight should not exceed 4 200 gr. The wing load should be around 40 gr/sq ds.
There are some things to do like to apply wire-bracing with turnbuckles (80 pc). But the major job is done.
Note: Wire-bracing is not fully installed i used for the time being a rope for trail fitting. Later i will use metal wire-bracings.
See the short move how the remote control works.

Great building Nikolay . I think you will have to verify the electric consumption with all the servos with the movment of all these cables and pulleys. The servos are noisy but I suppose they are digital and that the room makes the sound louder...

Gents,
The cables are exterior fitted in the same way as for original model. However there are slight changes I put the upper cable inside the wing structure as to remove the friction of air above the wing. The original one has the upper cable on the exterior surface of wing.
Why so noise, it is explainable, the glider is on garage, there is echo and the cables and wire-bracings are just temporary mounted without proper tensions.
I need to make some improvements still. But the controls work and movable parts are moving as it should be.

A status with construction as of 30.03.2014.
So, almost all major work is done. There are a few things to be yet done.
I started a coat of varnish of some glider parts.
I am in doubts about vanishing the wings parts inside, is it needed to be done or not prior to apply covering?
Nose part is detachable for easy repair in case of crash. The pilot seat is also detachable as to get easy access to servos.
I have faced a problem to buy Diacov 100 - termofilm, there are a few internet sites where Diacov 1000 can be purchased in France, but all of them are in French and they do not have options to deliver the goods in Russia, too me it is strange. What is the problem to sell the product to Russia?
So, who might give advice or help how to buy Diacov 100 from France to Russia. I need around 15 meters with width 0.75 meters of Diacov 1000.
