For this project I am trying some new techniques. First of all I have constructed a fuselage jig from metal which I hope will be used for all my fuselages in the future. It consists of two lengths of 50 x 50mm L-section Aluminium bolted together, leaving a slot in the middle. Steel brackets slide up and down as required along the slot, making the setting up of a project very quick and simple. A steel tape measure is attached with double-sided tape for quick alignment of the fuselage formers. The total cost for the jig was around £60 for all the parts...

Dear Chris,
Very interesting, this new technique.
We are following your new construction with close attention.
Good luck.

Hello Chris,
I also interesting for this famous method.
I think it can be a very good solution for all of us here
and I` am happy to follow your project in the next time.
Best regards

Merci messieurs...I should say that the jig is not of my invention, I have copied from a fellow UK modeller, with a few modifications of my own
The next new method I am trying is to design the Loravia in CAD. But how? I know nothing about CAD?
Then I came across Devfus from the DevCad website, which is a way for beginners to design fuselages on the computer. This allows you to blend different former shapes to give a smooth transition throughout the fuselage.
It is not easy to use, but the results are very promising. The best feature is the 3D preview at each stage, so that you can see if you are getting it right before you cut any wood...
The programme also calculates the jig supports, excellent for my new jig...!
You can download a free trial version from here: http://www.devcad.com/eng/default.htm

Hello Chris
i have not yet made parts of wood.
I'm not quite finished with the Konstuktion.
In the moment I'm building my A-Spatz in M 1:2.5.

Olli, I am working between Profili, Devfus and Illustrator to produce my drawings...
So, we start to cut wood. The jig supports are made from cheap CTP from my local timber yard...(All the parts are cut by hand with my scroll saw, of course)
Now the formers are set up on the jig...
Et, voila!

Nice, Olli...
Now the diagonal 6mm sq. balsa is added to make the rear of the fuselage rigid...
A strip of 1.5mm CTP is added to give a clean joint between the front glassfibre and rear fabric of the fuselage...
Then, the 1.5 CTP planking at the front can be added...

Hallo Espenlaub,

It seems a good idea to set up the fin and AMT while the fuselage is still on the jig so that they can be set up accurately...
So now the fin and rudder construction commence...

I love the jig Chris.
I suppose the fuselage can be left on until it's time to clad the bottom.
No more bananas!
BTW I suppose you realise that you're turning into a computer Nerd, don't you.
Me? I think they're just a passing fad.

Actually, Devfus will also calculate an upside down position on the jig: might try that next time...

Some filler for the base of the fin now...
and now the rear end is almost complete...
The fuselage can now be removed from the jig...
and the lower ctp planking completed...

The two main longerons that located on the jig are now removed...
With the remporay formers removed, the inside of the fuselage can be glassed...
1/2-round hardwood mouldings are glued to the 6mm square longerons to simulate the metal tube of the full-size...

A quick look at the wings, as they are fairly simple to make...
The new jig is also very useful for holding the wing spars straight while they are marked out for tapering...
The brass wing-joiner boxes are angled inside the spars for a straight join...

The pictures on the wall indicate that the egyptian decoration of the F-CEEM takes your attention. Note that F-CEEM is a LCA-11 and the wings are completely covered with plywood without fabric. F-CEED is a LCA-10, the wings are partially covered with fabric as indicated on your drawing.

Merci fceed, more stuff I didn't know I started with Martin Simons SF27M drawing, then found Richard Ferriere's website, now I discover there is an LCA 11! My model will therefore incorporate elements of all three.
Not to worry though, my main purpose is to build her under 7Kgs for slope flying in light winds, and I'm sure she will look pretty there anyway...

I won't detail the wing construction too much, as they are all pretty much the same...
So, making up the canopy frame. the long pieces (2 of 3 x 6mm spruce) are laminated against the sides of the fuselage to obtain the correct shape
Marking out the curve of the wing root fairing...
Balsa is used for the main shape...
and finished with glass cloth and polyester resin...
The Flamingo canopy is a perfect fit

Now to make a BIG hole in the wing!
Airbrake installed...
I started this project over the Christmas holiday, now, with this last picture we are up to date and in real time (Pic taken yesterday)
